Create your heroine

This class is inspired by Jane Austen and her literary heroines.

Jane had such a talent for expressing what lives within a woman’s heart, and this is what this deeply emotional and exquisitely colorful project is all about: We are going to open up our hearts and honor our feelings by painting our very own heroin in the intimacy of our art journal.

A woman’s feelings

Expressing our truth as women, allowing our feelings to be felt and our stories to be told, is an act of courage, in today’s world as much as in Jane Austen’s time. She created her heroines to express everything she could not say openly: hopes and pain, dreams and frustration, love and the longing for freedom… A fierce woman’s heart and an artist’s soul under the quiet surface of a lady. So what if, like Jane, we turned our journey as a woman into the story of our own unique heroine?

My courage always rises at every attempt
to intimidate me.
— Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

Words and art

Jane’s art was her words, so we’re going to begin the class by writing. A letter. To Jane. Like we would write to a sister, and an artist, a kindred spirit who is gently lighting the way for us and understands every feeling. Then we’re going to use our words in our painting: the art journal is the perfect place to weave words and art together, and we’re going to do it with exquisite colors and delightful mixed media techniques!

I will guide you step by step as you:

  • Tune into the feelings of your heart to let them infuse your painting

  • Find inspiration from images and from Jane Austen’s novels

  • Look within and loosen up by writing a letter to Jane that will become part of your art

  • Have fun recreating a true-to-life Jane Austen letter with Jane’s type font and some tea!

  • Imagine your own heroine and let her tell you her story, sketch her and easily shade her with inks

  • Build up layers of collage, paint and inks to make her world come to life

  • Incorporate words into your piece in a variety of ways (we will even play with a quill, just for fun!)

  • Add finishing touches that will add more beauty, emotion and meaning to your page

  • Keep your heart open to let the story unfold with love

The art journal is a safe, intimate space to express our feelings and tell the stories of our heart.

Laly Mille Artist

I walk my artist’s path in bare feet with my face toward the starry sky. I create from a place of lightness, ease and not-so-ordinary magic. Following the soft voice of my inner guide has shaped the artist I am today.

As a child, imagination and creativity were my sanctuary, and it was always that which I made with my hands that delighted my spirit and made me the most proud.

Today I find joy and a sense of true purpose in not only bringing beauty into this world through the art that I make, but also in nurturing the creative longings of others. As an online art instructor and certified creativity coach, I’m grateful to be able to share the gift of inspiration each and every day.

Through all extensions of my work, I aim to capture the whispers of fairytales, the lighthearted beauty of imperfection and myriad emotions through layers of light. It’s my heart’s desire to connect to that deep place that resides within you and is simultaneously in every one of us—that inner knowing of the soul which you can’t put into words but feel is more true than anything else you know...

I love connecting with creative souls all over the world on a daily basis. When I’m away from the studio or my computer, I enjoy spending quality time with my husband, William, and our two children in the Loire Valley of France where not a day goes by that I’m not inspired by the sheer beauty of my surroundings.
