Sentry Page Protection

Chunky covers

The whispers of our souls can sometimes feel tiny, quiet, fragile... just like some of our pages will be. The idea here is to create thick, chunky, textured covers to protect the delicate pages inside. They give the book consistence and weight, really turning it into an object. They invite you to hold it in your hands.

They also mark the boundary between the outside and the inside. You can think of the covers as protectors of the whispers: imagine them as strong, beautiful guardians of the mystery within: you can keep this symbolic meaning in mind while creating your covers...

By starting to create the covers at this early stage, we will get an even better "feel" of what the book will be, and it's nice, also, to have the inside and the outside evolving alongside each other throughout the process.

Another very practical reason for working on the covers now, is that if you're creating them with plaster, they'll take some time to dry!

Once you have your little "bundle of possibility", and your covers, you are literally holding your book in your hands!

1. Plaster covers

What you'll need:

To create the covers:

  • a waterproof surface to protect your table (plastic place-mat, plastic bag...)
  • fabric of your choice (see video)
  • plaster gauze
  • water

To unite the covers:

  • bookbinder's cloth or other thin fabric (thin cotton, tulle, cheesecloth...)
  • matte gel medium
  • flat brush

2. Vintage book covers

What you'll need:

To create the covers:

  • A vintage book about the size of your little bundle. As an alternative you can print out a scan of a vintage book and collage it on the cover of a not-so-old book or some thick cardstock. You'll find some printables on our Pinterest board.

To unite the covers:

  • cheesecloth or other thin fabric (bookbinder's cloth, thin cotton, tulle...)
  • matte gel medium
  • flat brush
