Artful covers

with wax & lace

We are now spiraling out of the deep-dive exploration that we did as we caught the whispers inside our books... It's time to take care of the outside too, and focus on beauty and delight! Time to give attention to those "guardians of the whispers" that our book covers are.

Book 1: wax and crochet

This technique makes for the yummiest covers ever... they even smell delicious! We're going to start by adding a layer of wax to our plaster covers and embed a ribbon into the wax (that will allow us to keep the book closed). We'll then add our chunky crochet doily and add some white encaustic paint on top for extra yumminess!

What you'll need

Check out the encaustic set-up page to prepare your space and your supplies

  • Clear encaustic medium or just natural beeswax
  • White encaustic paint or a white oil stick to make your own paint (see video on the encaustic set-up page)
  • Two flat natural bristle brushes (hake brushes are ideal)
  • Heatgun
  • A piece of ribbon or strip of fabric about 4 times the width of your book
  • A crochet doily or any other element that you want to use to decorate your cover. You could also create your cover only with wax if you prefer

Book 2: Vintage & lace

We take our book cover to the next step with some extra vintage layers! It's really the moment to make use of your most precious lacy things if you have some: here I have used a crochet doily and a piece of delicate lace. Or you could go for a completely different look and build upon the grunginess by distressing your cover even more with paint, ink, pastel etc. Let the materials you have at hand be your guides once again!

What you'll need

  • Matte gel medium (watered down)
  • A flat brush
  • A piece of ribbon or strip of fabric about 4 times the width of your book
  • A crochet doily or a piece of lace (or both), or any other element that you want to use to decorate your cover.
