Your Art Matters

your art matters

Dear Artist,

Let me say that again: Dear, dearest Artist. No matter what form your art takes, be it painting, stitching, cooking, making a beautiful home or simply doing your best to be the most loving and vibrant version of you, you are an artist. So today, in this mad and scary world, I want to remind you of that, because it matters so, so much.

Right now I'm not sure how to process the craziness that's going on once again, and so close. If I start reading the news, focusing on the sadness and the fear, I know I will quickly feel utterly helpless and paralyzed. And I sure won't be making any art, because there will be this nasty little voice telling me that really, what difference can it make? Or worse, wouldn't it be selfish, like an indulgence, a luxury when others are going through so much pain?

But thank goodness, I know that little voice all too well, the sabotaging, cowardly voice of my inner critic. And there's a deeper, stronger voice that just won't take any of this, won't let me give up, ever. It's my inner soul, my inner light, reminding me that I have a job to do:

I'm an Artist.

never give up

Years ago, with two online artist friends, we decided to meet in real life for a day in Paris. We purchased a small lock with three keys, and locked it on the railing of the Pont des Arts (back when you still could). Then we held hands and turned towards the river, and we shouted out at the top of our voices: "I am an artist! We are artists!" We swore then and there to never forget. Never give up. We giggled a lot too, it was exhilarating.

That night I went home with my little key. It has been hanging in the studio ever since, a precious talisman, a reminder of my life commitment, of what I'm here to do:

My job as an artist on this precious planet is to notice, create and share beauty, which to me means love, joy and a deep connection to the magic that lives within our souls.

My job is also to inspire others to notice this beauty around them, find it within themselves, treasure it and allow it to bloom.

In fact, it would be much easier to give up and go with the flow of negativity, to let sadness and anger take over, let them drain our creativity. Except, we’re braver and stronger than that. Through every painting, we learn what it’s like to get stuck, and then get back on track. Again and again, we push forward and overcome our creative blocks. We can do this.

Where flowers bloom, so does hope.
— Lady Bird Johnson

the power to create

The reason why it matters so much, is that there is power in creativity. Because the more love, joy, beauty and peace we CREATE, right where we live, the more positive energy we bring into the world. Energetically, spiritually and collectively, it makes a difference. And I believe with all my heart that it really really matters.

When bombs fall and destruction strikes, every creative act is a step forward, towards life, love and light. When we paint, we create actual positive energy right there on our canvas. Then as we share our art with others, we allow all these good vibes to ripple out into the world. And it really needs it right now.

Deep in their roots, all flowers keep the light.

let's dare to bloom

I've so been looking forward to reopening my online class Flower Flow in a few weeks, yet the recent events have filled me with doubt: what's the point of painting flowers?...

But then, I look at the garden outside my window, and I see how bold, brave and joyful they are, eager to bloom despite the frosty nights, turning their heads towards the light. Little flowers may not seem like much, but they are real works of art, and messengers of love.

So now I am feeling more motivated than ever to keep painting them and sharing them, with the intention of sending out love, hope and a little bit of sweetness out into the world.

I am so proud of all the beautiful, heartfelt and uplifting art that keeps blooming from the students. Flower Flow is rooted in love and positivity, and I would love for you to join me on this journey soon!

"What we focus on, grows", right? So today it feels more important than ever to notice and cultivate peace, love and joy wherever we are. Please keep creating, keep sharing your gifts and the love of art with those around you.

And when in doubt, just put your hand on your heart and say:

I'm an Artist. My art matters.
