When the creative spark dims
Dear artist,
Let me say this again: dear, dearest artist.
No matter what form your creativity takes, whether you're painting, stitching, cooking, tending a garden, making a beautiful home, or simply doing your best to be the most loving and vibrant version of yourself… you are an artist.
You carry a unique light within you, and the way you express it matters. Truly.
Especially now. In this mad and sometimes frightening world, I feel a deep need to remind you of that truth. Because your creativity, your kindness, and the beauty you bring into the world matter so much more than we often realize.
And sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do is simply keep creating.
When the creative spark feels quiet
These past months, I’ve found myself struggling to process everything that has been happening in my life. Divorce, moving house, and the emotional weight of it all have left a heaviness in my heart that is difficult to put into words.
And during times like this, my creative spark sometimes dims.
I procrastinate. I tick other things off my to-do list. “Stuff” comes up. And that familiar little voice begins to whisper:
What’s the point?…
Maybe you’ve heard that voice too.
It tells us that making art is selfish or futile when the world feels heavy. It convinces us that creating is some sort of luxury we can’t afford right now.
When I don’t have the energy or the courage to begin something creative, it’s easy to follow those excuses. There’s always something more “practical” waiting to be done. Paperwork, business decisions, groceries… life fills the space quickly.
Despite organizing my supplies and setting time aside recently, I still haven’t made any art in my new home yet.
And you know what? That’s OK.
Listening to the artist within
After many years of creating, I’ve learned to recognize the ebb and flow of creativity. I’ve also become very familiar with the voice of my inner critic. It feeds on fear and doubt, and it always knows exactly what to say to shut me down.
But there is another voice too.
A deeper, stronger, wiser voice that lives quietly within.
The voice of my soul.
The artist within.
My inner light.
Even when creativity feels distant, that voice gently whispers:
You have a job to do. You have art to make.
And I know that someday soon, that’s the voice I will follow again.
A promise I made to myself
In my creative space, I keep a small key that has followed me through every chapter of my artistic journey. From my early days creating at the kitchen table, to different studio spaces, and now back again to a small corner of my home.
It’s a tiny object, but it carries deep meaning.
It reminds me of a promise I made to myself long ago:
To never forget that I am an artist, even when I’m not actively making art.
And to always come back to the truth of who I am.
Sharing your art means sharing your light
Being an artist is not just about making beautiful things.
It’s about noticing beauty in the world, even in quiet or difficult moments. It’s about expressing that beauty and sharing it with others.
For me, creativity has always been about connection. Through mixed media art, painting, and art journaling, I’ve discovered ways to explore emotions, tell stories, and nurture the creative soul.
And when we share what we create, we do something extraordinary: all that fairy dust flows outward, quietly touching others, uplifting hearts, and making space for joy.
We remind others of their own inner light.
We inspire them to notice beauty in their lives, to reconnect with their creativity, and to let their own unique magic bloom.
When we choose to honor our creativity, we are choosing life, healing, and hope.
Why making art makes us stronger
Sometimes it would be easier to stop creating. To let the heaviness of the world pull us into numbness or fear.
But artists know something powerful about the creative process.
Every time we create, we practice resilience.
We experience doubt.
We face resistance.
We step into the unknown.
And yet we show up again and again.
Through painting, art journaling, and exploring new art ideas, we move through fear and uncertainty and allow something new to emerge.
Something meaningful.
Something beautiful.
Something that reminds us who we are.
The quiet power of creativity
Creativity holds real power. Not just the kind we see with our eyes, but a quiet, energetic force that transforms everything it touches.
When we choose to create, whether through paint, collage, writing, music, or simple acts of care, we are choosing love. We are choosing joy. We are choosing peace.
And those choices ripple outward far beyond our studios or art journals.
Every time we create something beautiful in our homes, in our creative spaces, or on the pages of our journals, we shift the energy around us.
We nurture life, light, and hope in a world that desperately needs it.
And it matters. I truly believe it matters more than we know.
The magic of creating
When life feels difficult, every act of creativity becomes an act of quiet resistance.
A way of saying:
I still believe in beauty.
I still believe in light.
When we paint, we are not just filling a canvas. We are generating positive energy.
In our own small way, we are making magic.
And when we share our art, that magic spreads outward. It touches other hearts, lifts spirits, and creates space for wonder.
Right now, the world is hungry for that kind of magic.
For gentleness.
For beauty.
For truth.
And what you create helps restore that balance.
So let’s keep going. Let's keep creating. Together.
And above all, please keep sharing your creative gifts and the love of art with those around you, and with the world. Keep showing up.
When in doubt, just put your hand on your heart and say:
“I am an Artist. My art matters.”
If you need a nudge of motivation, inspiration and community support, or simply a lovely space to escape and reconnect to your creative soul, that's what my classes are for, and I'd love to walk this path beside you.
