wild roses

abstract floral painting class

supplies and tools

Below is a list of suggested supplies for the class. Clicking on the product images will take you to the Amazon shop for your country where applicable (affiliate links).

I particularly encourage you to look through your supplies (inks, paints, collage papers, pastels...) and gather anything that reminds you of roses!

Substrate

  • Stretched canvas. I use a 16" x 20" canvas but you can work in any format you like. Square ones are really great too!

  • For the warm-up: Sturdy white paper like heavy watercolor paper, card stock or cardboard...

BASIC TOOLS

  • A palette (or a simple white plate). You will need a surface that's big enough to comfortably roll a little brayer. Optional: I also use a whole lot of small transparent plastic lids.

  • Water + Spray bottle

  • Rags

  • Something to protect your surface (old towel, table-cloth, plastic bag...)

  • Something to protect your clothes (apron, old shirt...). We're going to get messy!

  • Optional: Craft heat gun (embossing tool) to speed up drying

painting TOOLS

  • Your fingers!

  • Your choice of paintbrushes, including a medium-sized flat brush for collage

  • An old plastic card (credit card, key card...) and/or palette knives

  • A small brayer

  • Optional: a straw to blow ink around!

COLLAGE

  • Cut out images of roses (from magazines, gardening catalogues...). Since I’m a fan of English Roses, many of my images come from the David Austin catalogue. I prefer to tear them along the outline instead of cutting them with scissors: it creates softer edges that blend with the painting better.

  • Matte gel medium

  • Optional: a few book pages (that inspire you!)

  • Optional: white or pink tissue paper

Paints, inks etc.

For this project, I mainly use white, greens and pinks/reds. I also use some blues and yellows. I invite you to use the colors that you love the most.

White

  • Heavy body Titanium White acrylic

  • White, fine tip POSCA pen

  • Optional but recommended: Titanium White fluid or high flow acrylic paint / acrylic ink

  • Optional: White gesso

Color - Acrylic paints, inks & other supplies

These are the colors I use the most but I encourage you to use YOUR favorite ones! Another favorite red that you’ll see me using in the videos is Naphtol Red Medium fluid acrylic by Golden, unfortunately I couldn’t find a link for this one on amazon.com but I’m sure many art stores carry it.
