What is mixed media art?

A Gentle Introduction for Curious Creatives

Welcome to “The Gentle Guide to Mixed Media Art”, a 3-part series exploring mixed media, creative techniques, and the joy of art journaling!

Dear creative soul,

Have you had a moment recently to nurture your creativity?

Behind the scenes in my studio, I often spend time writing, editing photos, and creating new lessons. Sharing art techniques and creative inspiration with fellow artists is one of the most joyful parts of my work.

Many of the images in this article come from lessons I teach in my online classes, so if anything catches your eye, there’s a pretty good chance you can learn it!

Today I’d love to explore a simple question together:

What exactly is mixed media art?

The Joy of Creating with Mixed Media

One of the most beautiful things about mixed media art is that there is always something new to explore.

You can experiment with materials, combine techniques, and gradually build a creative practice that feels uniquely your own.

Mixed media is:

  • freeing — the opposite of rigid academic art

  • playful and whimsical — a beautiful way to reconnect with your inner child

  • forgiving — there are no real mistakes

Because of this, mixed media is incredibly welcoming for beginners.

And even if you’ve been creating for years, it helps keep that fresh beginner’s curiosity alive.

Mixed media is layered, surprising, joyful… and never boring!

What Is Mixed Media Art?

At its simplest, mixed media art is art created using more than one material or technique.

For example, an artwork might combine:

  • acrylic paint

  • collage papers

  • pens, pencil, crayons

  • inks

  • written words

  • dimensional elements like stitching and found objects

There are no fixed rules — only possibilities!

But beyond the technical definition, mixed media is also a way of creating.

It’s about building layers, both physically and metaphorically.

You begin somewhere simple and gradually add marks, textures, and colors, often without knowing exactly where the piece will lead.

The process becomes a conversation between you and your art:

A gentle dance between:

  • chaos and harmony

  • light and shadow

  • color and texture

Each layer tells part of your story — even the ones that eventually disappear beneath others.

From first layers…

… to a finished page!

A gentle place to begin…..

If mixed media sparks your curiosity and you’d like a relaxed way to explore it, I’ve created a free painting demonstration where you can watch the creative process unfold step by step. It’s a gentle introduction to layering, intuition, and playful experimentation.

Why Artists Love Mixed Media

Mixed media invites freedom.

It doesn’t demand perfect drawing skills or formal training.

Instead, it encourages curiosity and experimentation.

You might start with a scribble… Add a splash of paint… Glue a torn piece of paper…

Within minutes you’re already on a creative journey that feels spontaneous and alive.

This freedom can be especially powerful when you feel creatively blocked.

Because in mixed media nothing is wasted.

Every “mistake” becomes another layer.

Every unexpected mark becomes an opportunity.

Even the famous ugly stage eventually transforms into something surprising and beautiful.

Mixed media can be whatever you need it to be:

  • expressive paintings

  • layered art journal pages

  • collage artworks

  • textured assemblage pieces

There is room for all of it.

Who Is Mixed Media Art For?

Mixed media art can be for anyone who feels drawn to explore creativity in an intuitive way.

But over the years, I’ve noticed it resonates especially strongly with certain kinds of creative souls:

The curious beginner

Mixed media is often where people begin when they want to make art but don’t feel confident drawing or painting in traditional ways.

Because the process is so forgiving, it offers a gentle way to step into creativity.

The sensitive & imaginative soul

Many artists who love mixed media have rich inner worlds filled with ideas, memories, emotions, and stories.

Layering materials becomes a way to translate that inner world into something visible and tangible.

The woman rediscovering her creativity

Many women come to mixed media during a period of life where they finally have space to explore something just for themselves.

Art becomes a companion in that process of rediscovering their voice and creative identity.

The modern creative seeking a digital detox

In a world filled with screens and constant busyness, working with paint, paper, and texture feels grounding.

Mixed media brings us back to analog, tactile creativity — tearing paper, brushing paint, feeling textures beneath our fingers.

And sometimes, that is exactly what the soul needs.
