This painting has a whole under-layer of book pages by Jane Austen and Emily Dickinson, two brave women and artists from the past who can inspire us today. The words "by a lady" are how Jane Austen used to sign her novels. She couldn't use her own name, but still affirmed her work as a woman's. There is simplicity, courage, elegance and a sense of mystery in those three little words, and in these free-flowing blooms.
